Living in Tamarin

A laid-back west-coast surf town with valley views, resident dolphins and a growing creative expat community.

Overview

Tamarin sits on the west coast where the Rivière Noire valley meets the sea. Famous for its surf break and the dolphins that gather in its bay, it has a relaxed, outdoorsy character that draws families and remote workers who want calm without giving up modern conveniences.

The west enjoys drier, sunnier weather than much of the island and spectacular sunsets over the lagoon. Tamarin and neighbouring Black River have become the anchor of the west-coast expat scene.

Why it works

The essentials

Outdoor living

Surfing, kitesurfing, hiking in the Black River Gorges and dolphin-watching on the doorstep.

Drier climate

The west is among the sunniest, driest parts of the island — a real draw year-round.

West-coast schools

International schooling on the west coast makes Tamarin practical for families.

A calmer pace

The community feel of a small town, with Black River's amenities minutes away.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is Tamarin better than the north for families?

Many families prefer the west for its calmer pace, outdoor lifestyle and drier weather. The north offers more amenities and nightlife. We help you weigh schools, budget and lifestyle before you choose.

What's the difference between Tamarin and Black River?

They adjoin one another. Tamarin has the surf-town heart and beach; Black River is a little more upscale with the marina and larger villas. Most residents use both interchangeably.

Philip and his team have been excellent throughout our application for a retirement visa. They guided us through every aspect of the process and even looked after us personally when we were in Mauritius with our medical, banking and immigration visits. We found them very friendly, experienced and knowledgeable.

We reached out to TBI once we had decided to move to Mauritius. It has been invaluable to have Philip's knowledge and advice. Nastasia took us to our meetings at the EDB — she has an excellent relationship with them and getting our permits was a great experience. I highly recommend TBI for all your relocation needs.

I contacted TBI for the Mauritius Retirement Non-Citizen visa. Philip was in regular touch throughout the entire process. It took longer due to strict documentation requirements, but we finally got through. The company was very professional in their approach.
